The Majesty of Trees

An arboreal world unfolds in fired earth …

A unique collaboration between one of the finest art potteries in the world today and two organisations that do so much to protect and care for trees and woodlands has opened the gates of design and glaze artistry par excellence.

Moorcroft Pottery is joined by Action Oak and the Royal Forestry Society to celebrate The Majesty of Trees in a new collection of exquisite ceramics handmade in the Arts & Crafts tradition.

On the 15th of October 2024, the collection will be launched at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire - an estate which is home to more than 866 veteran oaks in an area known as High Park.

The launch will consist of a presentation in the morning, with special guests Elise Adams - Moorcroft Managing Director, Alison Field - RFS Vice President, Geraint Richards - Chair of Action Oak and Head Forester at The Duchy of Cornwall, Filipe Salbany - Estate Conservation Manager at the Blenheim Palace and Eric Knowles - Ceramics expert and television personality. Tickets are going fast, so please ensure you book your place soon if you’d like to come along to the launch!

Could you be a Citizen Scientist?

Forest Research and The University of Warwick are conducting a project that aims to understand how surveys for tree pests and pathogens can be more effective through the involvement of citizen science. They need help finding individuals interested in participating in their acute oak decline field workshop days on the 5th, 10th and 11th of October 2024. No previous experience is necessary, and all levels of experience are welcome.

In the workshops participants will be looking at oak trees and learning to identify pests and pathogens that cause their decline. The information gathered will be used to evaluate different training methods. Workshops are currently arranged at four sites, and volunteers will receive training by Dr. Nathan Brown, a Forest Research AOD expert. Participants can claim transport and lunch costs (up to £60) with receipts. More details and the sign-up form are available at https://forms.office.com/e/2v78f7NePB

Researcher Spotlight

Ryan McClory, University of Reading, is working to understand the mechanistic drivers of oak masting. Masting is a complex reproductive behaviour of oaks; years of lean acorn crops are punctuated by great rains of acorns littering the forest floor. Ryan McClory, an Action Oak-supported researcher, has been tasked with researching this long-term phenomenon, fitted into a three year PhD, and passed his Viva last Friday. Congratulations to Ryan!

Recap

Oak Fair 2024
Annabel Narayanan visited the Oak Fair, which took place on Saturday and Sunday, August 24th and 25th. The Oak Fair is a celebration of the countryside, conservation, woodland, timber, traditional craft, and rural history, and it takes place on the Stock Gaylard Estate, Sturminster Newton, Dorset.

"It was a privilege to share our work with your visitors and fellow exhibitors, who showed great interest. The rain didn't stop us from having great conversations with so many oak enthusiasts. We're grateful for the opportunity to discuss the essential work we're doing to protect our oaks now and for the future." - Annabel Narayanan
