News

National Tree Week 2023

The Tree Council are one of Action Oak’s partners. In late November they run their annual, seasonal campaign ‘National Tree Week’.
This year it runs from the 25th of November until the 3rd of December and the theme is 'Grow a Tree in 23!'
It marks the 50th anniversary of the famous ‘Plant a Tree in 73’ campaign – from which National Tree Week (and The Tree Council) were born!

Oak Day 2023

On Thursday 30th of November 2023 The Tree Council are kindly collaborating with Action Oak to platform Action Oak’s ‘Oak Day’ to help raise public awareness and appreciation for the UK’s native Oak trees.

We have created resources including oak images, prompts & ready-made social media captions to help you celebrate Oak trees.

New 5p coins!

The Royal Mint issues the new definitive coins with the new 5p set to feature oak.

"The Royal Mint’s internal product design and technical teams collaborated with the RMAC and external artists to create eight new designs that both symbolise the four nations of the UK and pay tribute to the conservation of the natural world – a cause close to The King’s heart. Providing feedback throughout the process, His Majesty’s involvement with the design process is testament to his passion for craft and the arts." (The Royal Mint)

The definitive UK 5p coin displays a leaf taken from an oak tree, which itself is a national symbol of strength, wisdom and healing. Supporting more life than any other native tree species in the UK, the oak tree has a storied association with monarchies, as ancient kings of Britain and Roman Emperors wore crowns of oak leaves.

Events Recap

We're reaching the end of our events programme for 2023. We're excited to share our events programme for 2024 in the new year, if you have an event that would benefit from an Action Oak presence, please get in contact with actionoak@woodlandheritage.org

Norbury Park

It was fantastic to meet up earlier this month at Norbury Park where we were hosted for our Steering Committee meeting. The day included a tour of one of the World's largest climate change experiments: BIFoR FACE.

Sculpture by the Lakes

In October, Action Oak attended the Dorset-based Sculpture by the Lakes hosted ‘ARBOR: A Month of Trees’ exhibition.
The month-long exhibition ran from the 27th of September to the 28th of October and brought world-renowned nature experts and artists to Sculpture by the Lakes in a month-long exhibition featuring a specially curated selection of sculptures and artwork inspired by crucial woodland species to celebrate trees. It was inspiring to meet so many fascinating people to talk all things Oak!
